Assam is under water!

Yes. it is a real fact. From Sadia to Dhuburi, total 16 districts are under the attack of last flood of this season.  Almost two months before Assam faced another great flood. However, in this latest flood, it has been estimated that, the loss could be more than Rs. 2000 crore.

As usual, the most affected district is Dhemaji. It has become like an island, because all the road communications are cut with this district. Loss is enormous. Lakhimpur district also have effected badly. Many dykes breached, resulted lakhs of people are affected.

The condition of the cultural hub of Assam, Majuli is pathetic. Almost 16 Shatras(monastery) are under water. The biggest river island in Asia (Once world’s biggest) is weeping! Tuesday, 25th Sep, 2012 was an auspicious day for Assam & Assamese, because  of the birth anniversary of Mahapurush Sri Manta Sankardeva.  Although it was a joyas, holy day especially for the peole of Majuli, it is a very sad feeling that a single Shatra was not ready  to celebrate the day with gaiety, even lot of Shatras were unable to lit up a single earthen lamp, according to the media reports. This is may be the first time in the history of Majuli of such sorrowful situation. Almost all the bridges and roads are washed away by the flood water.  Except some dykes and one or two roads, the whole Majuli is under water. People are taken shelter on these places living with domestic animals. Not a single relief camp has been set up by Govt. initiative.

World heritage Kajiranga is also greatly affected by this unprecedented flood. Lots of wild animal washed away. Some of them are taken shelter on roads & some other places where flood water has not yet touched, have become the victim of poachers.  13 Rhinos were killed in this year & their horns were cut(while we are writing this blog, another Rhino in Kajiranga is attacked; its horn & one ear has been taken by by the poacher while the animal is alive!!!!!!!), on the other hand meat of other animals, like, deer is available in those places. The condition of Dibru-Saikhowa also same.  Human, and their greediness!

The Gateway to North-East, Guwahati is also under the claws of flood. In some places like Pandu, Adabari, Ujanbazar, Garigaon,  Sunsali of Noonmati the water of mighty Brahmaputra entered very fast.

What is our Govt. doing?

In the last flood, Assam Govt. deployed some personnel of NDRF & SDRF. Only these people are working with some boats in Upper Assam. Because of bad weather, helicopters also could not be utilized affectively. Relief camp & other rations are also not been supplied properly. In simple words the people of Assam is in hell.

On the other hand, the CM is on Japan tour. Around 3 months before, in the last great flood in this same year, where at least 110 people killed, he was in America tour. PM Dr. Monmohan Sigh along with Sonia Gandhi came to Assam, enjoyed an aerial view by helicopter, and quitted. Then he declared Rs. 500 crore as flood relief-rehabilitation & other infrastructure development work devastated by flood, but Assam has yet not received a single Rupee from that package.

This time Sonia Gandhi “appraised” all the people and organizations who are engaging in helping the flood affected people (how shameful!) But PM Monmohan Singh, also the citizen of Assam(huh!) yet not spelled out a line from his mouth, says he is “concerned” about the flood havoc in Assam. Is this not a sheer insult for the people of Assam?

In the year 2008, this same PM declared Rs. 1,010-crore flood relief package for Bihar & also, declared that flood as national calamity! World community knows that each year Assam drains out hundreds of crore of Rupees to Indian Ocean. People live in hell during those conditions. They have to do nothing but to see helplessly that mighty Brahmaputra engulfing their property, their crops, their land, their domestic animal along with their lives; each year. AASU along with other organizations have been demanding to declare the Assam’s recurrent flood as a national calamity, but it happened in case of Bihar, never in Assam! Why? Because no bold voice from Assam is there in Parliament to demand or to portray anything strongly, the burning issues of this state, which have been receiving step motherly treatment all the time from Delhi before & after the independence till date!

89th Birthday of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika!
