Dr. Debo Prasad Barooah, the former vice-chancellor of Gauhati University, passed away on Monday, Jan 2013. He was 82 years old. He was admitted to the International Hospital, Guwahati, on January 24 for old–age related ailments.
Dr. Barooh was a noted litterateur, intellectual & a brilliant academician. He had a brilliant academic record & did D Phil on the thesis “Indo-British Relations 1950-60”. He started his career as a lecturer in History in 1957, and later served as a reader in Political Science dept. of Gauhati University. In 1986 He became the Vice-Chancellor of and finally retired in the year 1991.
Dr. Debo Prasad Barooh was not only a man of academic brilliance or a patriot, but he was also associated with lot of academic and social institutions. He was a member of the UGC’s permanent Standing Committee on Human Rights & an Emeritus Fellow of UGC for two years. He was also the life patron of North-East India Political Association, senior Associate of Institute of Advanced Science Studies(Bangalore) etc.
Dr. Barooh published many highly intellectual research papers, some of which were published in national and international journals. Some of his published works include World History, Indo-British Relations 1950-60, World War I and II and Other Essays, Aspects of History of Assam, Karagaror Diary: Bir Nari, Ansolikotabadar Dostabej, Bharotor Baideshic Niti & one novel Phulmoni etc.
Though
he was the follower of Marxism, he strongly believed in regionalism. For the
same reason, he stood near the leaders of AASU at the time of Assam Agitation
and later with AAGSP led by then chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta. However,
later on, because of some moral reasons he kept himself in a safe distance
from the direct regional party politics.
He
was a man of struggle and his struggle was for the people of his own society
and country. He was also associated with human rights and trade union organizations.
Dr.
Barooh was a true son of this land and tried to give his best for the
development of this long neglected part of India. Though he was away from
active politics, he was, as if, the backbone of all recent movements in
Assam. Even few days
before, he was with the people who were fighting for the various issues of
Assam and North-East, like Anti-Dam movement etc.
Dr.
Barooh was referred as a guardian of the Assamese of current time because he always
stood with the people of his motherland whenever there was a crisis or conspiracy
with this land.
His death is a great loss, especially for the
people of Assam & North-East.
